A Love Letter

Carlsbad, California

July, 2006

"A band can be too loud," says Tommy Thayer, explaining why he and Amber Peek hired a DJ for their wedding reception. Coming from any other groom that statement would be unremarkable. But when his new wife chimes in, "My husband can wear makeup and spandex and somehow it's really cool," you know there's more to the story.

Amber met the Kiss lead guitarist in 2003 at a party in Dallas. Tommy invited her to a concert and she was impressed when he greeted her by name. "We bumped into each other every night that week," Amber recalls. He requested her number just before the legendary rock band left town.

After a two-month telephone courtship, Tommy asked Amber to meet him in Chicago near the end of the tour. "We haven't been apart since," he says. "I'd never felt like I did with Amber. In the entertainment business, you get cynical; Amber was completely genuine."

On Amber's twenty-third birthday, they returned from a celebratory dinner to find their room at California's Bacara Resort glimmering with two hundred white candles. "You couldn't even see the floor, there were so many rose petals," Amber remembers. After presenting her with several gifts, Tommy said, "There's one other thing I forgot," as he knelt and asked, "Will you marry me?"

"It was a hot night," Tommy quips. That's because a call at four in the morning alerted them that wildfires were headed toward their home. Amber collected the rose petals before their hasty departure.

Their house didn't burn, and they were left with a "perfect memory," says Amber, who took inspiration from that night as she was planning their destination wedding at the Four Seasons Aviara Resort. "My proposal was so romantic, I wanted to recreate that," she explains. "I'm not a girly girl; I like everything to be beautiful and sexy. I wanted everyone to feel like they were on a date."

By planning a Sunday evening celebration, they allowed plenty of time for golf, spa treatments and relaxation all weekend. As Amber was dressing for the lagoon-side service in the Palm Courtyard, a messenger delivered a love letter from Tommy.

An eight-piece string ensemble played Beethoven, Bach and The Beatles as 150 guests witnessed the couple's exchange of vows. The ceremony "was about family," says Tommy, who created a video about their lives to lead off the reception inside the Aviara Salon. "There wasn't a dry eye in the room after we played it," he says.

The DJ kept partygoers on the black onyx dance floor until midnight, and after a farewell brunch, the newlyweds departed for a ten-day honeymoon at the Four Seasons Hualalai in Hawaii. The rest of the summer was like "an extended honeymoon" as they settled into the home they'd built on the Oregon coast, Amber says.

"All of our friends and family want to have a wedding reunion," says Tommy, who stays busy with Kiss appearances. Amber, who designed her bridesmaids' necklaces and is developing her own jewelry line, is usually by his side. "It's fun to watch him play," but she really loves the man beneath the makeup. "He definitely is the rocker guy," she says, but he is also a "solid guy" with a "soft heart."
