Destined to Meet
San Juan, Puerto Rico

Online only.
Caroline McConnie and Richard Carrión met during a sporting clays shooting tournament at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2005. While Richard’s mother and Caroline’s mother were friends growing up in their native Puerto Rico, and clay shooting had brought the families together over the years, Caroline and Richard had never met until the inaugural cocktail reception for the tournament.
For years, Richard had been curious about meeting the girl whom his grandfather praised for being such a great shot. That night, both Richard and Caroline had a slight suspicion that they would continue to see each other very often in the upcoming future.
Fate brought them together to the extent that they were independently planning to move from their native Puerto Rico to Chicago a few weeks after their first encounter—Caroline was about to start her Juris Doctor MBA program at Northwestern University School of Law and Richard his position in commercial lending at Banco Popular North America.
The couple’s love for fine dining in a city with such diverse offerings made way for countless dates and a very beautiful relationship soon bloomed.
Richard asked Caroline to marry him at their favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago, Spiaggia, in the summer of 2006. The couple wed in their hometown of San Juan on the evening July 15, 2006 at Parroquia San Jorge, and celebrated their love among friends and family at the beautiful peony-filled ballroom of the The Ritz-Carlton, San Juan Hotel, Spa & Casino, to the beat of the legendary salsa band, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, until dawn the next day.
