Flight of Fantasy

Oakland, California

February, 2006

Her heart took flight whenever she was with him.

On a bright and sunny day in February, 1942 when Ida Calliott was shopping for hats at Kahns Department Store, she had no idea that 64 years later her granddaughter would be getting married on the very same spot.

Eight years before the wedding, Jennifer and Roland met at a health club. Roland surprised Jennifer on a vacation to Mexico when he proposed on the white sand beach at sunset.

The hues of the sunset were so spectacular, that Jennifer instantly knew the color scheme for the wedding would be mango, olive gold, and champagne. She knew who would cater the food: Patrick and Laura Schoolcraft of Patrick Davids Catering in Danville, CA with whom Jennifer worked. And she knew she wanted twinkling lights everywhere to remind her of the stars that were out that night.

The menu was carefully composed to have international flair, flavor and color. The cocktail party featured champagne, of course, and three signature drinks: cranberry lemon drops, ginger martinis and classic martinis.

Jennifer selected an eclectic mix of white-glove butlered hors d'oeuvres including lobster pot stickers with lime beurre blanc & sweet chili; coconut prawns with red Thai curry sauce; Patricks famous sizzling sea scallops; handmade gnocchi with oxtail reduction served in miniature demi cups; and miniature chicken Wellington with tarragon sauce.

The main course of petite filet mignon wrapped in pancetta with shiitake mushroom cabernet reduction was coupled with petite lobster served over gorgonzola potato cakes and bundles of vegetables of asparagus, carrot, mushroom and green onion tied together like bouquets.

The traditional wedding cake was accompanied by a lavish dessert buffet of miniature cakes and the grooms favorite Cold Stone Creamery ice cream, as well as a candy bar of their favorite treats.

Jennifer always felt like her heart was soaring when she was with Roland. So, she wondered how to incorporate the sensation of flight into their wedding day. When she saw Graham Days Trapeze World performers at a corporate event she had catered, she knew just how to create that feeling for her guests. And she knew just where the wedding would take place.

The historical Rotunda Building in Oakland, CA, has an atrium dome topped with a spectacular stained glass window rising 125 feet above the carrera marble floor. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1989, and after a $43 million face lift of the Beaux Art masterpiece, the Rotunda was the perfect place for a former cirque du soleil performer to fly high over the heads of wedding guests and wow them with an unexpected performance.

Other touches that added to the feeling of flight were feathers that Eunice Venetta of Pairs and Pieces playfully added to the bouquets and flower arrangements.

The looks on the faces of the guests and the gasps that escaped from them made planning the surprise worth the effort. At the end of the evening, Roland presented Jennifer with a miniature ring identical to his own wedding band to remind her that he would always be thinking of her. And as he did, her heart took flight again.
