Finding something great by accident.

Videography

The word “serendipity” means to find something great by accident and that is exactly how Taryn and Jeff Bills’ business—Serendipity Videography—got started.

It all began six years ago when Jeff was working for a CBS affiliate in Phoenix, Ariz., as a Videographer/Editor and Producer. Part of a “Special Projects Unit,” Jeff’s work focused on investigative and long-form news pieces. One day, the News Director came into his office and delivered some life-altering news: they were shutting down his department and he would have to return to general assignment news. For Jeff—who had won 12 Emmy Awards—this was a prison sentence.

That night he went home and told his wife Taryn. Even with the recent addition of their first child, Taryn was secretly happy. You see, she had wanted Jeff out of the news business for some time, doing away with the long hours and unpredictable schedule. For years, Taryn had actually been saying, “We should be shooting weddings!” and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Right on cue, that very same night, Taryn got a phone call from her best friend announcing her engagement. And more so, she explained that while she really wanted Jeff to be a guest at her wedding, she also wanted him to film her wedding day. Taryn shouted yes before consulting with Jeff; luckily Jeff agreed to do it.

At the end of their friend’s wedding, Taryn looked at Jeff and said: “So? What did you think?” Jeff looked at her with a smirk and shouted, “I loved it! Today I got to tell a great story full of emotion, excitement and love.” As it turns out, Taryn knew that Jeff would love shooting weddings and had been putting together what would be the next chapter of their lives, coming up with a name, logo, business plan and even setting up a website. “

Jeff is a storyteller by trade and what story is better to tell than a story about two people falling in love,” shares Taryn. A few short months later, Serendipity Videography had gotten so busy that Jeff left his job in television altogether. Now Serendipity Videography consists of five teams of videographers, four full-time editors, Taryn running the company, and Jeff overseeing the cinematography and editing. Piece by piece everything with their business fell into place in a very “serendipitous” fashion showing Jeff and Taryn that this truly was what their life path should be.

And as the industry has evolved, so has their company. Nowadays, you will also find Jeff and Taryn working on video save the dates and their latest project: video love stories to share at engagement parties, rehearsal dinners or the wedding itself. The one shown here is for Emily and Dustin, whose wedding was 10 years in the making.

Since their journey to the aisle took a decade, Emily and Dustin felt like they needed to recap that journey for their guests reminding them of how far they had come and what ultimately led them to wed. They opted to shoot a "Love Story," documenting the journey to be shared with guests at their wedding reception.

Emily and Dustin got married in Arizona, but they recently moved to Pasadena, California. Since they were starting their married life together in a new city they thought the beach was the perfect place to document the history of their love—sort of a reflection of the past, while looking forward to their future. This fun-loving, yet laidback couple wanted to shoot their Love Story at California’s historic Santa Monica Pier, epitomizing fun and good times.

Emily and Dustin were up for anything, which made the shoot so much fun for Serendipity Videography: They played games, walked the pier, played on the swings and meandered down the beach while splashing each other in the ocean. In just the few short hours they spent together, Jeff and Taryn could see what these two adore about each other. They are playful, flirty and so in love.
