Throughout history, celebrity couples have made headlines for their weddings and engagements. Those marriage proposals are often announced to the public with photographs of extravagant engagement rings that are, more often than not, custom designed. From world-famous stones like the Krupp Diamond, to eye-popping rocks in deep shades of pink, here are eleven of the top celebrity engagement rings that had the media buzzing.

Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor may have been married eight times and received several engagement rings, but none made as big an impact as her incredible stone from Richard Burton. The Welsh actor actually beat out Harry Winston during a bidding war for the ring, known as the Krupp Diamond, paying USD $305,000 for the 33.19-carat diamond in 1968.

It’s still unknown where exactly the Krupp Diamond originated, although some speculate it was either mined in South Africa or India’s Golconda region. Vera Krupp, a German actress, was the first to publicly be seen with the diamond after her industrialist husband purchased it for her sometime during the mid-1950s. The ring was stolen from her in 1959 but recouped by the FBI, and Krupp remained its sole owner until her passing. Today, the iconic celebrity engagement ring is known as “The Elizabeth Taylor Diamond,” and was auctioned off at Christie’s Auction House for more than $8.8 million dollars.

Grace Kelly

History aficionados may have noticed that Grace Kelly was seen wearing two different engagement rings from Prince Rainier. Her original ring was designed by Cartier and consisted of an eternity ring set with rubies and diamonds. After realizing Hollywood’s celebrity engagement rings were relatively flashier at the time, the prince promptly replaced it with a 12-carat rectangle-cut diamond ring, stating that he always intended for the original band to be a “place holder.” Grace’s ring is now owned by the House of Grimaldi and is worth an estimated $38.8 million dollars.

When Beyonce and Jay-Z became the ultimate power couple, tying the knot in 2008, their road to the altar began with an 18-carat emerald-cut diamond ring. Priced at $5 million dollars, the flawless stone has graced the singer’s hand until recently, when she began posting a massive marquis diamond on her finger instead. Perhaps the “Upgrade U” singer decided to give her diamond wardrobe a makeover.

Kim Kardashian

When Kanye West proposed to Kim Kardashian in 2013, he did so with an exquisite 15-carat cushion-cut diamond ring. Custom made by jewelry designer, Lorraine Schwartz, the engagement ring had a whopping price tag of $3 million dollars. Not one to settle for just one headline-grabbing piece of jewelry, Kanye followed that up with a second engagement ring in 2016 – this time, another Lorraine Schwartz creation featuring a 20-carat emerald-cut diamond.

Emerald-cut diamonds are a timeless design that span generations, so nobody can say for sure; but after Kim’s second ring, it seems like emerald-cut engagement rings became even more popular among celebrities and the general public alike.

Mariah Carey

Leave it to Mimi to take celebrity engagement rings to the next level. Although Mariah Carey and James Packer never made it down the aisle, the ring still manages to rank among the top celebrity engagement rings of all time. Packer, an Australian billionaire, popped the question with a $10 million dollar ring featuring an enormous, emerald-cut diamond with baguette side stones – a grand total of 35 carats. Not only was her ring larger than Elizabeth Taylor’s; it was even bigger than Kim K and Beyonce’s engagement rings combined.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

In 2018, American singer-songwriter Nick Jonas made his fast-paced and super-secretive romance with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra official by proposing to her with a jaw-dropping cushion-cut diamond, surrounded by smaller tapered and ethically sourced baguettes – which, according to experts, are among the finest quality diamonds found in nature. This glamorous ring of five carats is said to have set him back about $200k or more, as stated by gemologist and diamond expert Grant Mobley. To shop for Priyanka’s ring, Jonas reportedly shut down an entire Tiffany & Co. store.

Hailey Baldwin Bieber

One of the hottest topics of 2018 was the engagement and the eventual exchanging of vows between singer Justin Bieber and model Hailey Baldwin. The ring that Bieber chose for Baldwin turned out to be no less of a trendsetter than the couple themselves. He gave her an enchanting, nearly colorless, 10-carat oval-cut diamond, enhanced by a transparent halo, with a value somewhere in the range of $450k and $700k. Because of the ring’s low profile, Bieber decided to accommodate it with different shapes and chose to go for a dazzling set of custom-designed V-shaped pavé diamond bands on both sides – not only to give this token of engagement for his bride-to-be a unique and stellar look, but also to allow the bands enough room to sit solidly on her finger despite the diamond basket being very low.

Jennifer Lopez

In November 2002, the Batman star, Ben Affleck, proposed to globally renowned Jennifer Lopez with a blinding 6.10-carat radiant-cut diamond in a shade of deep pink, augmented by fancy white diamond accents on the sides. At the time, this elegant sparkler cost him around $1.2 million dollars. The ring’s worth, however, has increased significantly since then, and estimated to be around $10 million.

Meghan Markle

In the fall of 2017, Prince Harry gifted Meghan Markle a custom engagement ring, which he personally designed with the help of London based jeweler, Cleave and Co. The ring features a breathtaking 3-carat cushion-cut center diamond, sourced from Botswana, where the couple once sojourned during their courtship. Two smaller stones that came from his mother, Princess Diana’s personal collection, were added to the ring’s sides for an extra sentimental touch. This stunner was priced around $95k-$155k but was eventually sent to be redesigned. Harry tasked Lorraine Schwartz with resizing and altering the ring, which has been replaced with a thin, yellow gold band set covered with micro-pavé diamonds. The new ring made its first public appearance at the Trooping the Color Parade in June 2019.

Katy Perry

In 2019, The Lord of the Rings actor, Orlando Bloom, decided that Valentine’s Day would be the perfect opportunity to pop the question to singer/songwriter Katy Perry. Fitting her vibe and personality perfectly, Bloom selected a glamorous and one-of-a-kind flower-shaped ring, fashioned after a daisy. The sparkler features an oval center stone with a halo of eight smaller stones surrounding it. According to gemologist Gandia, the ring is made out of high-quality yellow gold and has a total value between 25k and 50k. It isn’t certain whether the center stone is a ruby or a diamond. If it happens to be a pink diamond, then its value is presumably between $500k and $2 million dollars.

“We imagine this ruby to be one of the highest quality stones, possibly even the most sought-after hue of pigeon blood, which is recognized by its vibrant red color with a purple hint,” the expert further explained.

Megan Fox

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly were one of the first celebrity engagements of 2022. MGK popped the question with a custom engagement ring that he co-designed with jeweler Stephen Webster.

“I know tradition is one ring, but I designed it with Stephen Webster to be two,” MGK explained on his Instagram. “The emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (by birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul, forming the obscure heart that is our love.”
